About Dhanbad

Dhanbad is located in eastern part of India and situated in the border of state of Jharkhand with West Bengal. Earlier, Dhanbad was a part of state of Bihar but when Bihar was divided into Jharkhand and Bihar, it came under Jharkhand. The area covers 2052 Sq Kms (15 miles by 10 miles approx) and population is over 2 million. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Dhanbad has an average literacy rate of 75.71%, higher than the Indian national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85.78% and female literacy is 60.74%. In Dhanbad, 10.57% of the population is under 5 years of age. The culture of Dhanbad is fairly cosmopolitan with people from all parts of India but mainly from the neighbouring states of Bihar and West Bengal.
Early history is not available but according to folklores, Dhanbad was formed out of Manbhum. As per popular beliefs, Manbhum and Singbhum were regions during the Mughal emperor Akbar's regime when Man Singh who was general of the mughal emperor Akbar's army, came to the area for hunting and named the regions. It is said that many of his men lost their way and settled there. Early history of seventh century AD is also available indicating that the area was ruled by king Shasanka.

Administration

Dhanbad is the Headquarter of the District and also the headquarter of DMC (Dhanbad Municipal Corporation). DMC was formed as per the State Government Notification dated 1/02/06 with merger of areas Jharia NAC, Sindri, NAC, Chhatandih NAC, Katras NAC. Dhanbad city elects one Member of Parliament. Also some part of the district come under Giridih seat of Lok Sabha. There are six Legislative Assembly seats; they are Sindri, Baghmara, Dhanbad, Jharia, Nirsa, Tundi.
Dhanbad has District court and a Labour Court-Industrial tribunal. Along with Mumbai, Dhanbad is the only city having two Labour Court-Industrial tribunals. Mineral Area Development Authority (MADA) looks after the development of the district.

Economy

Dhanbad is a coal mining and industrial city and one of the busiest commercial centres in eastern India. It is the second largest city and urban agglomeration in Jharkhand after Jamshedpur.
Dhanbad is famous for its coal mines and industrial establishments; it has 100+ coal mines with a total produce of 27.5 million tonnes and an annual income of 7000 million Rupees through coal business. There are also a number of coal washeries present there. The city is also known for its power generation plants. Hydro Power is being generated at Maithon and Panchet. Tata Power and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) are setting up a 1050 MW thermal power plant at Maithon. That project also got completed and came into operation. Now one unit is running successfully. ONGC is using CBM (Coal bedded methane) for power generation at some of the coal mines.

ISM, The Indian School of Mines, was started by the Britishers in 1926. Located in Dhanbad, it draws students from all over India through IIT-JEE, as well as other countries. It is one of the pioneer universities of its kind in Asia. Situated in the heart of the country’s prime coking coal belt, 260 km from Kolkata with a campus spread over 88 hectares, the fully residential ISM has all the facilities of world-class academic institute. In addition, Dhanbad has engineering colleges (BIT, Sindri), Medical Colleges (PMCH, Dhanbad) and a number of degree colleges providing university degrees in various subjects. Dhanbad also has excellent schools and other educational infrastructure..
Transport

Dhanbad is well connected with metros through train and road routes. The nearest airport is Birsa Munda Airport, Ranchi which is 140 Kms from Dhanbad city. Dhanbad has excellent rail connectivity with Kolkata which is the nearest metro. National Highway 2 and National Highway 32 are the major highways passing through Dhanbad. NH 2 has now been converted into Golden Quadrilateral (GQ). Golden Quadrilateral starts from Kolkata and ends at Delhi. A six lane expressway connects Dhanbad to Kolkata which also connects to Delhi in western side. Inside Dhanbad, auto rickshaws and private cars are the mode of transport available. In addition private and government buses also connect the length and breadth of the district
Tourism

Dhanbad is surrounded with natural beauty like lakes, dams, rivers, mountains and wildlife. You can enjoy boating in Maithon lake. A Bird Sanctuary and a Deer park are also present near Maithon which is 45 Km from the city. Bhatinda Falls (in picture) is 14 Kms away from the city and you can reach there by car/taxi. Panchet Dam is also worth watching. There are religious places around with enormous amount of history attached to them such as Kalyaneshwari Temple, Panra, Bhuiphor Temple etc.
